Why We're Choosing Experiences Over More Toys

Why We're Choosing Experiences Over More Toys

When we think about giving our children the "best" childhood, it's easy to picture birthday presents piled high under the table or overflowing toy bins after the holidays.

But what if one of the greatest gifts we could give our children isn't another toy at all?

Research continues to show that meaningful play, shared experiences, and quality time with family have lasting benefits for a child's development — and those are exactly the moments we hope to inspire through Little Locals.

Play Is How Children Learn

Play isn't simply entertainment.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, play is fundamental to healthy brain development. It helps children build language, social skills, emotional regulation, creativity, and problem-solving abilities.

Whether it's exploring an aquarium, visiting a children's museum, taking a pottery class, or hiking a local trail, children are learning every step of the way.

More Toys Don't Always Mean Better Play

It might seem surprising, but research suggests that having fewer toys can actually improve the quality of a child's play.

In a study conducted by researchers at the University of Toledo, 36 toddlers were observed playing in two different environments — one with 4 toys and another with 16 toys.

The results were remarkable.

Children who had access to only four toys:

  • Played with each toy significantly longer
  • Used each toy in more creative and imaginative ways
  • Demonstrated deeper focus and sustained attention during play

Researchers concluded that fewer toys encouraged higher-quality play because children weren't constantly distracted by new options.

It's a helpful reminder that children don't always need more — they often benefit from having the opportunity to fully engage with what they already have.

Memories Build Stronger Relationships

One of the most meaningful findings in consumer psychology is that experiential gifts often create stronger emotional connections than material gifts.

Experiences foster connection because they're shared. Instead of simply receiving an object, families create memories together — memories that become part of their stories and relationships over time.

Think about it.

Years from now, your child may not remember every toy they opened on their birthday.

But they might remember:

  • Feeding a giraffe for the first time
  • Baking cupcakes with Grandma
  • Catching their first fish with Dad
  • Watching dolphins on a boat tour
  • Taking their first gymnastics class

Those moments become family traditions and lifelong memories.

Investing in Your Local Community

Choosing experiences doesn't just benefit children.

Every museum visit, art class, horseback riding lesson, camp, or music class supports the local businesses that help make our communities vibrant.

When families choose local experiences, they're investing in small businesses, local instructors, educators, artists, and entrepreneurs who are passionate about serving children.

That's one of the reasons we created Little Locals.

Our Mission

At Little Locals, we believe childhood should be filled with curiosity, adventure, creativity, and connection.

We're not against toys.

We simply believe there's room for something more.

  • More family time
  • More exploring
  • More learning
  • More memories

Our hope is to make it easier than ever for families to discover incredible local experiences and give gifts that continue long after the wrapping paper has been thrown away.

Because the moments children remember most are rarely the ones that came in a box — they're the ones they experienced with the people they love.
